About this condition
Treatment separates diffuse shedding — which usually signals a systemic cause such as thyroid disease, iron deficiency, PCOS or recent illness — from patchy alopecia areata, which is autoimmune. Identifying which pattern is present determines both the remedy and which blood tests are requested.
Symptoms we see
- Excessive shedding when combing or washing
- Widening parting or thinning crown
- Round bald patches
- Brittle hair and dry scalp
- Hair fall after illness or delivery
- Associated thyroid or PCOS
Not every patient has every symptom — and the combination present is precisely what determines the remedy.
